Weekend Twenty-Three

 (Self-Portrait by Deanna Johnson)

It was a busy week in Hartford. Playhouse on Park opened Arthur Miller’s Enemy of the People. Actually it was an adaptation of Ibsen’s play about one man with the truth on his side stands up to the rest of the community and is branded an enemy. Nothing ever changes. Peter’s old friend Michael Mackenzie plays one of the leads; the mayor who leads the citizenry against the hero. We went to the dress rehearsal on Tuesday.

On Wednesday we attended the Hartt Art School Alumni Art show at the Silpe Gallery at UH. It was a juried show and entries came from Hartt grads around the world. It was a pretty nice show, all in all. Our friend, Ethan Boisvert, was one of those chosen:

The next night we went down to the Hilton in downtown Hartford for the unveiling of Ethan’s triptych which was commissioned for the hotel’s bistro. There was a major celebration with lots of wine and great free food. I even did an interview with a man from CT NPR about the business of Art. But we couldn’t stay long as I had to get to rehearsal in Collinsville.

We saw a performance of Molliere’s Tartuffe at UH’s performing arts center which is off campus. The theatre was in the round, or more accurately, in the square, with seating all around. The show was terrific. Very funny, for the 15th century, and very well acted. I can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed ourselves. Unfortunately, I have no pictures to share.

Marie went to Florida on Saturday morning, and, after dropping her at the airport, I drove west for my concert with the FVB in Winsted. I drove through East Granby, where I saw this unusual piece painted by the students from the Allgrove & Seymore Elementary schools:

And then, through Granby, were I found this statue:

And finally, West Granby, were the morning sun made this stone house particularly attractive:

Continuing west, I crossed the damn at the Barkhamsted Reservoir:

Finally, in Winsted I was early for rehearsal, so shot a few pics:

The concert was uneventful.  Afterward I drove to Talcott Mountain State Park for the annual Tower Toot. On the way along the ridge I was greeted with a "Go Gators!" as I was wearing my Gator cap.  The trail was crowded with visitors  Atop the mountain (a mile and a half hike up) sits the Heublein Tower, built by Gilbert Heublein in 1914 as a country retreat. There was food for sale and German music:

The 165 ft tower requires 120 steps to the observation deck.

Though the clouds were coming in, the views were very nice:

Mount Tom in Northampton, MA is visible in the center.
